Each week we bring you the story of one incredible entrepreneur who can be found inside the Hatch Tribe COLLECTIVE. Today we’re excited to introduce Amy Jackson of Sweetgrass Counseling in Charleston, SC.

What is your business and how did it come to be

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and I work with new moms to realize that while being a mom is hard, it doesn’t have to suck. I treat women who experience postpartum depression and anxiety, have had a miscarriage or stillbirth, infertility, and the mom who just has unrealistic expectations of what life is like with a newborn.

What’s the hardest thing about being your own boss?

Prioritizing and finding the time/motivation to do unpleasant tasks because if I don’t do them or pay someone to do them, then it won’t get done.

What’s the best part about being your own boss

I get to make the rules. I do not have to alter my treatment style to fit an agency goal/quota. If a client is not a good fit, I have the ability to make a referral to someone who can do great work with them.

How do you balance your personal life with your business?

I give myself clinical and non-clinical days. I have made my schedule as if I was completely full. Instead of trying to change my practice when I have a full caseload, I set up my ideal work schedule and only take on clients who can work within these boundaries.

How do you take care of your mind, body, and spirit?

I am constantly telling clients to find a creative outlet to do that is completely unrelated to their daily tasks/work. My outlets are baking and stained-glass work.

How do you keep yourself accountable?

Keep a schedule/planner and try to work ahead as much as possible. Do unpleasant tasks first and “reward” myself with the things that come super easy.

How do you handle those moments of self-doubt and fear?

Knowing that I am surrounded by other business owners who have been in my exact same place and they are currently rocking it. I do not need to do all the things and eventually, my hard work will pay off.

How has a so-called failure actually set you up for future success?

Using “Failure” as learning opportunities. Instead of having the victim mentality and asking why is this happening to me, reframe and be curious about what can I learn from this.

What book or podcast are you digging right now?

Unf*ck Yourself  by Gary John Bishop

Stop Doing That Sh*t by Gary John Bishop

Do the Work by Gary John Bishop

What is one quote or motto you live by?

“Every storm runs out of the rain.” Maya Angelou

What does the world need more of?

Self-compassion.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received as a business owner?

Be patient and stay consistent. It may suck at first, but the hard work will pay off. Remember why you started the business.
