Hatch Tribe Hero | Eve De Haan

With a name like Half Roast Chicken, you have to look.

Artist Eve de Haan started out by getting her degree in Theology. Now she creates neon art and operates under the handle @halfroastchicken. That's right—the fireball Londonite twists neon into script displays, and her work has not only made it into museums like the Museum of Neon Art in Los Angeles, but also GQ, The Times Style and Refinery29. Then Nike commissioned her for its tights campaign.

As an artist and a smart businesswomen, De Haan is proving that passion and prudence are not mutually exclusive.

Eve De Haan

What ignited the spark in you to start your business?

My love of art ignited the spark to start my business. I was visiting different exhibits around London and I realized that I could turn a passion into a business, if I made enough work.

What personality trait are you most proud of

I am proud to say that I have strong will. If I believe I am going to do something, I will put my all in.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I've received is not to worry too much about what other people think of you and to try and make something new everyday.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Don't be afraid to start something and then start something else. Along as you are putting all your efforts into something, you can't go wrong.

Where do you find inspiration?

Everywhere and anywhere. The more time I spend not looking at my phone, the more time I have for finding inspiration.

What do you love to come home to?

My English bull dog pup, he has just turned one and he is lovely.

Name a women entrepreneur past or present you admire, and tell us why.

My sister, Naomi De Haan runs a successful lingerie business, Edge O' beyond. She is one of the hardest working people I know, with such a fierce vision. She has taught me so much about the importance of being prudent in a business.

When you’re not working, what is your favorite way to spend your free time?

I used to be a professional alpine skier, so when I have free time I am always doing something active.

What book has inspired you the most?

Bryan Stevensons Just Mercy, really opened my eyes to so many societal issues. This book wasn't related to art as such, but after reading this book, I realized,  to make change you have to make change. I try to emulate this through my artwork.

About Eve De Haan

Eve De Haan is a London-based artist who has exhibited her work across in Europe and in America. Her degree in Theology has informed and influenced her work, developing a strong body of installations which examine concepts of change and the imprint technology makes on youth culture.

In 2017 her work was exhibited in the Museum of Neon Art in Los Angeles, and featured on a variety of platforms including GQ, The Times Style and Refinery29. She also produced artwork for Nike's tights campaign.

Her creations are provocative and challenging. Through her love of the written word Eve delves into the concepts of gender roles, and the gradients and shades of meaning within a statement. Eve finds neon an ideal medium to explore the expression and the changeable nuances within the words so readily used in society today.
