What is your favorite part of being an entrepreneur?
It’s given me the opportunity to create value on my own terms and do what I love. It challenges me repeatedly to step outside of my comfort zone. I’m forced to grow by working this muscle of getting comfortable with being uncomfortable.
What keeps you up at night?
Being better. Not perfection but improving. I’m constantly looking at the big picture of what I do and trying to figure out the best way to bulls-eye my purpose.
What ignited the spark in you to start your business?
I’ve always wanted to venture out and start my own business. The push came about from a restructuring of my position that forced me to leave. At the time I was frustrated and uncertain. However, I realized that the hard moments are in some ways a call to action. I had to step up to the plate and be an advocate for myself. Could I fail at doing what I love? Yes, but the effort is certainly worth it.
What personality trait are you most proud of?
I am incredibly optimistic. I can see through the foggy glass and know that clarity will occur. It fuels my passion and enthusiasm that comes with serving others.
In one word characterize your life as an entrepreneur. #TallOrder
Wowza!! That’s a hard one. I would say worthy. It’s a word that embodies so much of what I want for myself and for others. To own and define our worth brings forward the reality of knowing that you truly deserve the good and success that comes into our lives. The space you take up matters so go out there and share your worth.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
One that has stuck with me was when I decided to start my own business. A mentor of mine said that "you'll never regret doing what you love." She said that finding the perfect time is a convenient way of “not doing”. There is no perfect time. It made me realize that I had control of my “right now” and that is powerful.
What sacrifices have you made to be a successful entrepreneur?
I had to let go of people who did not support the good I was trying to create. It’s not easy to let go of relationships you’ve built. They become apart of you. What I’ve learned is that everyone comes into our lives to teach us something about who we are or what we are trying to become. Good or bad, it gifts us the experience to learn, grow and make room for our best self.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
You are born worthy. Be brave and know that mistakes/ failure are part of what makes you become a better you. Never stop trying.
Where do you find inspiration?
Through the stories of others. I listen to my clients, friends, podcast and read books. I take in the experiences that are shared and it connects me to our similarities and differences. It reveals that we are not alone in this journey of life.
How do you handle fear?
I recognize it. For me, fear shows up in moments that challenge our expectations of ourselves. Am I capable? Recognizing fear is part of the conversation towards growth. It allows me the space to stifle its powers and move through it. The self-talk that we have with ourselves is critical in moving through fear. I ask myself what makes me doubt or question myself. Most of the time, it stems from a feeling of not thinking I’m enough to slay what I’m up against. The truth is that I am worthy. I am capable and enough. I am here because I’ve earned it.
What would you do with one extra hour in the day?
Hangout with my stepdaughter Maddie and my nieces Dajah and Deanna. I adore them. I learn so much by listening to them and the lives they are building. It’s so fun.
What do you love to come home to?
My family, clean house, a made bed. I have to admit a made bed with fresh clean sheets is just pure heaven to me, especially when you start traveling more.
Name a women entrepreneur past or present you admire, and tell us why.
I am in total awe of Harriet Tubman. I knew very little about this woman’s life and I was inspired by her will, faith and courage. She had to believe in herself in a world where everything was stacked and created against her. It has made me realize that we don’t have to just show up and be in the world we are given. We can impact and create a ripple of change right where we stand.
When did you know your purpose?
Once I started to work with more women and heard their stories, it highlighted my purpose. I want every woman that I meet and work with to know that she is valuable and necessary. I saw that I could use this vehicle of fashion and style to change the narrative of how we view ourselves. You can show up with your competence and confidence in a package that is ALL you and that’s a beautiful thing.
What would you say are the top 3 skills needed to be a successful business owner?
1. A natural love and passion for your work. I’m a bit obsessed. I read articles, blogs, magazines, books, watch videos. I dive into anything that feeds my knowledge about fashion and style. This love or passion is what pushes you through so much of the hard and difficult moments.
2. Resiliency (show up, try, fail, learn, try and keep going). This will give you the space to take the failure that comes your way and move on from them.
3. Value (you have to believe that you are bringing value to others and they must be able to see that value). How are you making their lives better? This will feed your purpose to do what you do love.
What book has inspired you the most?
Better Human- It’s a Full Time Job by Ronda Conger. It made me realize that I had control of my “now”. I had to step up to the plate and do!
In your opinion, what does it take to be a great boss?
It’s allowing those that you work with to see and feel the purpose in what they do. The work they do brings value to the big vision you are trying to creating. Their sense of worth in that process matters.
What lessons did you learn from your best & worst boss?
From my worst boss, I learned that other people would not define my sense of worth.
From my best boss, I learned that mistakes can provide growth and it can be acknowledged in a way that doesn’t dismantle your sense of worth.
When you’re not working, what is your favorite way to spend your free time?
Hanging with the family skiing, camping or just being outside. Long chats over wine with my girlfriends.
