Meet the Tribe - Lisa Craig
Each week we bring you the story of one incredible woman who can be found inside the Hatch Tribe COLLECTIVE. Today we're excited to introduce you to Lisa Craig who is the Marketing Coordinator at M. Dumas and Sons.
What is your business and how did it come to be? Our business is a Men’s Specialty Retail Store that was founded in 1917 in the heart of Charleston’s historic shopping district. It is 103 years young! It actually started as a pawn shop, then a uniform shop and then the brothers, Joe and Abe Dumas, decided to bring in Levi Jeans from the West Coast. One of the first in the Southeast to do so and the rest is history! Dumas has always been at the forefront of new brands throughout their existence! M. Dumas has seen many, many changes, not only in the clothing world but in the retail business through the years. The way people shop has changed drastically in the last 20 years.
How do you balance your personal life with your business? I always find time for myself and to have fun! Even though I am always thinking about ways to market Dumas and make it better, sometimes I just have to put the device away and relax! I also hang out with my husband and my daughters as much as I can. Family is super important. I am also a big Clemson fan and we go to every game (one of my perks for working at Dumas – they let me go to all the games).
How do you take care of your mind, body, and spirit? On Sundays I veg out at home and watch all kinds of series… lots of mysteries, Netflix, Amazon Prime, BBC – any kind of series and I always take a long vacation every year! Oh and I LOVE to shop… especially for shoes!
How do you keep yourself accountable? My bosses keep me accountable – I never want to disappoint, because they let me have the freedom to do my job at my pace and from anywhere.
How do you handle those moments of self-doubt and fear? Well if it’s not going to kill you…I just do it! First starting out with Dumas I was always doubting if I was doing it right (I knew nothing about Men’s Retail), still am, but like I said, “if it’s not going to kill you…”
What book or podcast are you digging right now? I love murder mysteries! I am listening to Murder, Etc. It’s about a murder in the upstate of Greenville, SC (I’m originally from that area) and I know exactly where everything they are talking about occurs!
Who is one woman you admire and what you do you adore about her? My mother. She always pushed me to be whatever I wanted to be, even if that was a stay at mom. She taught me to always be kind to people, no matter what. I try so hard to instill that in my girls as well. Always be kind.
What is one quote or motto you live by? “Start each day with a grateful heart.”
What does the world need more of? Kindness and manners, always.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received? David Dumas said when I started, “If you mess up – what am I going to do to you? Kill you?” There you go!
