Meet the Tribe - Meghan Burgess
Each week we bring you the story of one incredible entrepreneur who can be found inside the Hatch Tribe COLLECTIVE. Today we're excited to introduce you to Meghan Burgess of Ignite Dance Competition.
What is your business and how did it come to be? I am the owner of Ignite Dance Competition. We are in our beginning stages and will launch our first series of competitions in 2021. I grew up a competitive dancer and had the opportunity to teach and choreograph for competitive teams throughout high school and college. After graduation, I served as the director and choreographer for many local competition teams and was asked to be a judge and teach master classes for a select number of National Competitions. I have been honored to be the recipient of several choreography, high score, and top performance awards for my choreography. My hope with starting Ignite is to continue to share my passion with fellow dance educators and provide a space for dancers to become artists.
What’s the best part about being your own boss? Creating your own schedule and being able to share your passions with others. By owning my own company I am able to do more of what I love, travel and spend more time with friends and family. Also, getting to know that I get to wake up every day and be an active member of the dance community is an amazing feeling.
How do you balance your personal life with your business business? It has taken a lot of effort and it still does. It's a daily balance of what is most important, where am I needed, and making sure both areas are receiving attention.
How do you take care of your mind, body, and spirit? Dancing! Dance has always been an outlet for me. I teach at a local studio 3 days a week and travel during the spring to judge competitions and teach master classes. I have also found that a good walk on the beach helps to clear my head.
How do you keep yourself accountable? I am a huge believer in a to-do list. I start at the end of each year planning for the next and then breaking these goals into quarters. Each quarter has a focus to help achieve my annual goals. I break it down even further as I construct my schedule for each week.
How do you handle those moments of self-doubt and fear? Reaching out to fellow entrepreneurs that understand what its like. Also taking a moment to think about what is the worst thing that could happen has helped to keep me level headed.
How has a so-called failure actually set you up for future success? It has taught me that failure is part of success. In order to be successful you are going to fail and that accepting that failure is part of the process. It keeps me humble.
What resources do you love that you think other business owners should know about? Canva has been a huge help to me in the beginning especially when it comes to social media posts and graphic design needs.
What book or podcast are you digging right now? I have recently found two podcasts that I can't seem to get enough of: Jay Shetty's On Purpose Podcast and the SHE podcast by Jordan Lee Dooley.
Who is one woman you admire and what you do you adore about her? My mom. She has been my biggest fan but has also taught me so much about being a strong woman in business.
What is one quote you live by? “You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.” - C. S. Lewis
What does the world need more of? Kindness.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received as a business owner? “Remember that no one will see your vision the way you do. It's your job to paint the vision for them.” - Amanda Boyd, Owner of House of Dance SC.
