Hatch Tribe Hero(es) | The Peaceful Truth
What happens when a yogi and a journalist who are both inspiring female entrepreneurs combine forces? Truth. Peace. And a lot of #GRLPWR. That's what the podcast The Peaceful Truth is all about.
Today we're breaking the mold of our Hatch Tribe Hero interview series to feature both hosts of The Peaceful Truth!
Meghan Hohertz is the yogi and Kenzie Meek-Beck is the journalist. Together, they are the two Texas entrepreneurs living in Seattle and playing double-duty as podcast hosts. Their goal is to uplift women, discuss social issues and feminism, and to fight for equality. And they make it a helluva lot of fun too.
What is your favorite part of being an entrepreneur?
Kenzie: My favorite part of being an entrepreneur is seeing something that I am truly passionate about come to life -- and helping others. I know it has become something real when someone reaches out to let us know that it has either empowered them or brought positivity into their life.
Meghan: My favorite part is seeing the impacts of our podcast and how it spreads positivity and women empowerment. I love hearing from listeners about how we made them laugh or how our stories affected their days in a positive way. Teaching yoga has the same effect. I love when my students come out of savasana a calmer, cooler, and more relaxed person.
What keeps you up at night?
Kenzie: The podcast keeps me up when I am trying to think about how to improve the content or move it forward in the future. It is something that I care for, so of course, I am always thinking about how to make it good!
Meghan: I worry about making smart financial decisions. Saving money is not my strong point, and my partner is very financially savvy. By no means am I drowning in debt, but if there’s a yoga retreat in Costa Rica that I want to go on, I go. I’m a sucker for the new latest and greatest “all-natural” skin care products. And my dog? Yeah, he gets to go to doggie daycare at least twice a week. If the day comes when my partner and I combine finances, I worry about what the look on his face is going to be. I can already hear him saying, “Meghan I set up a spreadsheet for you, I thought you were saving more than that!” But he know what he got himself into, so I’m sure he won’t be too surprised!
What ignited the spark in you to start your business?
Kenzie: As a young girl, my family uplifted me to achieve what ever goals I set my my mind to. But when I grew up and entered the workforce, I realized that discrimination against women is still very real, and from my upbringing, I knew it was wrong. So, I wanted to create something to combat it. In my early adulthood, I also learned how strong women are when they unite as one positive force, so I wanted to give others a resource to channel that energy.
Meghan: Kenzie ignited the spark! I would have never thought in a million years that I would cohost a podcast. Especially now that I have Invisalign and our listeners are blessed with my newly developed lisp. But I am so thankful Kenzie came to me with the idea. I’m so proud of the topics we discuss, whether they are funny or lighthearted or earth shatteringly deep. I am so proud.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Kenzie: Don’t let your dreams be just dreams. Figure out what it takes. Act on it. Make it a reality.
Meghan: “Inhale in the good air. Exhale out the bad.” - Meghan’s Mom
In one word characterize your life as an entrepreneur. #TallOrder
Kenzie: Persistence.
Meghan: Dedication.
What sacrifices have you made to be a successful entrepreneur?
Kenzie: Realistically, time has been my biggest sacrifice. It takes away from what typically may have been downtime. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world, because when you love what you do, “you’ll never work a day in your life.” Surround yourself with people who don’t think it is a negative and want to support you.
Meghan: Time. Time with my boyfriend, time with my dog Cooper, time sitting on my butt watching Netflix.
Where do you find inspiration?
Kenzie: Easy. I find my inspiration in the endless amount of strong women that I meet on a daily basis. They inspire me to spread awareness on women’s issues and to bring about a platform that encourages women to be kind and positive toward one another. Once we uplift and support each other, we are a positive, unstoppable force.
Meghan: I find inspiration in my yoga teachers and friends. I have so many strong, powerful women in the yoga world that I get to look up to everyday. They inspire me to be a better woman, a better friend, a better yoga teacher, and a better human being.
How do you handle fear?
Kenzie: I try to face it, and look at exactly what is making me fearful. Then, I realistically try to figure out if it is a rational fear -- and if it is, then I realize I am a stronger force than the fear and I try to find a solution to the issue. Fear is usually derived from a concern or issue, so if you alleviate and face the concern, then likely, the fear will go away.
Meghan: I don’t handle fear very well. Fear is usually a sneak attack. It sneaks up on me when I least expect it. Typically what happens is my life is going 100% great, and I reflect on that fact. I think of all of the wonderful people and circumstances in my life, and then fear hits me. BAM! Something bad is going to happen - things are going too well. To get over it, I have to talk myself down. I have to recognize the irrational thoughts - recognize the fact that our thoughts are not our truth.
Name a women entrepreneur past or present you admire, and tell us why.
Kenzie: My older sister, Chelsey Roney. She has always been a strong female role model and a positive influence throughout my entire life. Chelsey looks at what her entrepreneurial goals are, figures out how to make a reality, and just goes for it. She’s created multiple small businesses in her life and is always kind and positive to other people while doing it. She also finds women along the way and empowers them during her entrepreneurial journeys. Check out her business Collectabl, shameless sisterly plug!
Meghan: One of my best friends, Chelsey Roney. She is one of the kindest and most levelheaded people you will ever meet. Need advice? Chelsey has the best. In regards to being an entrepreneur, she is always persistent, dedicated to her ideas, and hardworking.
When you’re not working, what is your favorite way to spend your free time?
Kenzie: I love all animals! My favorite way to spend my free time is relaxing with my family and my big, fat cat, Binx, he’s one of the biggest sweethearts in my life!
Meghan: Yoga! I love asana (poses), meditation, breath work, and the community of it all. I recently started learning how to play the harmonium, an instrument used in bhakti yoga (a.k.a the yoga of devotion.) I love to play harmonium and teach mantras/chants to students interested in taking deeper dives into the philosophy and origins of yoga.
