5 Tips to Elevate Your Networking Game
As the Founder and CEO of Elevate My Brand, a Digital Marketing Agency in Los Angeles, you can say I’ve been around the block when it comes to networking. I’ve even been called a power networker. Learn how to elevate your networking game with these 5 tips.
Set em up to knock em down
Before I attend a networking event, I like to take a moment and set my goals and expectations. For example, one of my goals may be to collect 10 business cards. Or maybe I’ve connected with a good target prior to the event that I want to have a deeper conversation with. Either way, I make sure that I know what my goals are and I tell myself that I cannot leave until those goals are met, even if I’d rather be at home watching bad TV.
Prepare yourself
Oftentimes you’ll be given an attendee list prior to the networking event. We know that it takes 3-5 touch points before you become top of mind, so it’s a smart idea to try and connect with as many people as possible via LinkedIn pre-event. You’d be surprised how much easier and warmer it makes any room.
One great tip I’ve learned through networking is to set yourself up as a contact in your phone prior to the event. Doing this will allow you to easily share your own contact information with the people you meet. It’s more personal than business cards. I can literally pick up the phone and text almost any CEO I need and they’ll respond.
Don’t be a card shark
People want to work with companies who they like and trust, which is why it’s important to build lasting relationships. It’s better to make a great connection with one person than to make mediocre connections with five. Don’t be that guy or gal trying to deal your card to everyone in the room.
Say yes to color
As the saying goes, you only get one chance to make a first impression. If you’ve attended a networking event before, you know that the outfit color of choice is usually black, white, or grey. When I attend a networking event or conference, I like to wear something bright. You’re more likely to be remembered if you’re wearing something that stands out from the crowd. Sometimes I’ll even call it out in my follow ups (subject: your bright pink drinking buddy).
Bright colors will make your presence memorable. Add a genuine smile and you’ll be unforgettable. That means smiling from your eyes, not that fake “I’m in the room because I have to be” smile. Smiling instantly makes you more approachable by improving your appearance and creating trust and likeability. Who doesn’t want that?
Don’t let those cards stack up
In networking as in life, follow-up is key. You haven’t followed through in your networking if you haven’t followed up. Shortly after the event, make it a priority to reach out whether it be via email or phone call. Doing this will provide yet another touchpoint in creating a hopeful lasting business relationship.
Like anything else, networking is a skill that definitely requires some practice. With these 5 tips, you’re well on your way to making some lasting relationships. So go out there and get those leads!
